Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza is one of the most successful BJJ-to-MMA transitions in the history of mixed martial arts and one of the most dominant black-belt competitors of the mid-2000s sport BJJ era. Born in 1979 in Manaus, Brazil and trained under Henrique Machado in the lineage that descends from the Gracie family, Jacare won three IBJJF World Championships at black belt (2004, 2005, 2007), the 2005 ADCC absolute championship, and accumulated one of the most decorated grappling resumes of his era.

Jacare's competitive style emphasized aggressive submission hunting from top positions, a strong half-guard game from the bottom, and the pressure-passing system that has produced multiple Brazilian middleweight champions across BJJ generations. His ADCC 2005 absolute victory — defeating Roger Gracie in the final — remains one of the most significant absolute-division results of the modern era and established his credentials as one of the elite middleweight competitors of any generation.

Following his BJJ competitive career, Jacare transitioned to MMA and became a top-five UFC middleweight contender during the 2010s, with notable wins over Yushin Okami, Vitor Belfort, and Ed Herman, and competitive losses to Robert Whittaker, Yoel Romero, and Jack Hermansson. His MMA career was built on the same grappling foundations as his BJJ career — opponents who engaged him on the ground were typically submitted, while strikers tended to win on the feet. Jacare retired from MMA in the early 2020s and as of 2026 continues to coach and represent the classical BJJ-to-MMA crossover model that defined the 2000s competitive era.
