Rafael Mendes is one of the most decorated featherweight competitors in modern BJJ history and one of the co-founders of the Atos team (alongside brother Guilherme Mendes and coach Ramon Lemos). Born in 1989 in Brazil and trained under Ramon Lemos, Mendes accumulated five IBJJF Mundial championships at black belt and two ADCC World Championships across his competitive career — a dual IBJJF-and-ADCC dominance that distinguishes him from competitors who specialized in only one format.
Mendes' competitive style refined the lightweight technical vocabulary that Cobrinha and the previous generation had established. His berimbolo entries, his leg-drag pass system, and his combination of patient closed-guard work with explosive scramble finishing produced a competitive output that helped define the featherweight competitive landscape of the early 2010s. His rivalry with Cobrinha across multiple IBJJF Mundial and ADCC encounters was one of the most-watched competitive narratives of the era.
Mendes' broader institutional impact has been substantial through the Atos team that he co-founded. Atos has subsequently produced multiple generations of elite competitors — Mica Galvao, Tainan Dalpra, the Ruotolo brothers (in their youth-Atos period), and many others — and the team's pedagogical tradition has been one of the most influential in modern competitive BJJ. Rafael Mendes' personal competitive contribution combined with his institutional legacy through Atos establishes him as one of the most influential figures of the modern competitive era. As of 2026 Mendes is largely retired from active competition and focuses on coaching at Atos.
