Romulo Barral is one of the most decorated medium-heavyweight competitors in the history of IBJJF black-belt competition and a defining figure of the Gracie Barra competitive program in the late 2000s and 2010s. Born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in 1981 and trained under Vinicius "Draculino" Magalhães at Gracie Barra, Barral won the IBJJF Mundial at black belt four times across two distinct competitive periods (2008/2009 and 2013/2014), making him one of the rare competitors to return to the top of the podium after a multi-year competitive hiatus.

Barral's competitive style was characterized by an aggressive spider-guard offensive system that produced sweeps, omoplatas, and back-takes against opponents who could not effectively neutralize the spider grip configuration. His top game featured a heavy stack pass and a mount-and-armbar finishing chain that complemented the guard offense, producing one of the most balanced competitive profiles in the medium-heavyweight division of his era. His matches against Roger Gracie, Lucas Lepri, and the broader medium-heavyweight roster of the IBJJF circuit established him as a perennial podium contender.

After active competition Barral relocated to the United States and founded Gracie Barra Northridge in Los Angeles, which has become one of the most productive Gracie Barra branches outside Brazil. His coaching has produced multiple competitive black belts, and his instructional output continues to circulate widely in the modern BJJ pedagogical ecosystem. Barral remains active in BJJ instruction and occasionally competes in masters-division events as of 2026.
