Yvone Duarte is the historical foundational figure of women's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and one of the most significant pioneers in the sport's broader history. Born in the 1960s in Brazil and trained in the Gracie traditions of the era, Duarte was the first female to receive a Gracie black belt and the first IBJJF women's World Champion when she won the inaugural women's division at the 1985 IBJJF Mundial (in what was then a small division of 4-8 women total competing globally).

Duarte's competitive credentials at the time of her championship were established under the constraints of an era when women's BJJ was substantially marginal — formal competitive opportunities were few, women's divisions had limited registration numbers, and the pedagogical curriculum was implicitly oriented toward male competitive contexts. That Duarte achieved black-belt status and competitive championship despite these constraints established her as the foundational figure whose example demonstrated that women's BJJ could produce technical excellence at the highest competitive levels.

Duarte's pedagogical influence extends beyond her individual competitive results to her foundational role in the women's BJJ growth that subsequently produced the modern era's substantial women's competitive scene. Her continued teaching and her advocacy for women's BJJ across decades has positioned her as one of the most-respected historical figures in the women's competitive community. As of 2026 Duarte continues to be referenced as the foundational pioneer of women's BJJ and remains active in the broader BJJ community through teaching, mentorship, and advocacy.
