GOGOPLATA FROM MOUNT

Gogoplata da Montada

IBJJF legal at: brown

The gogoplata from mount is the rare variation of the gogoplata choke applied from a mounted position rather than from rubber guard. The technique uses the attacker's own shin pressed across the opponent's throat to compress the trachea, with the opponent's head pulled toward the shin to complete the air-choke compression. The technique is one of the most distinctive and rare mount finishes because the leg configuration requires substantial flexibility and the entry window is narrow.

The mechanics begin from mount or S-mount with the attacker working to swing one leg up and across the opponent's neck. The attacker threads the leg over the opponent's head so that the attacker's shin is positioned across the opponent's throat with the foot extending past the opponent's far side. The attacker's same-side hand grips the foot or ankle to lock the shin tight against the throat. The attacker's other hand pulls the opponent's head toward the shin (or controls the opponent's far arm to prevent escape). The finish comes from the combined shin-pressure and head-pull producing tracheal compression.

The gogoplata from mount is rare in elite competition because the mount-to-gogoplata transition requires the opponent to permit the leg-over-head configuration to establish — most competent opponents recognize the setup and frame against it before the configuration consolidates. Notable practitioners include various 10th Planet system competitors who have used the technique selectively. Defensively the gogoplata from mount is escaped by hand-fighting the leg-over-head threading before it consolidates, by stripping the foot-grip before the shin locks, or by driving the head into the attacker's body rather than away (denies the head-pull-toward-shin mechanics).

MECHANICS

  • 01Begin from mount or S-mount.
  • 02Swing one leg up and across the opponent's neck.
  • 03Position your shin across the opponent's throat.
  • 04Grip your foot or ankle to lock the shin tight.
  • 05Pull the opponent's head toward the shin to finish.

DEFENSES

  • Hand-fight the leg-over-head threading before consolidation.
  • Strip the foot-grip before the shin locks.
  • Drive the head into the attacker's body rather than away.
  • Roll toward the leg-over-head side to disrupt the geometry.
  • Recognize the setup early and frame to deny the position.
