Keenan Cornelius is one of the most influential pedagogical figures of the modern competitive gi BJJ era and the inventor of the worm guard system. Born in 1989 and trained through multiple instructors before settling at Atos under Andre Galvao, Cornelius accumulated multiple IBJJF Pan-American and European Open championships at black belt and made his most lasting contribution through the lapel-based open-guard system he developed.
Cornelius' worm guard innovations through approximately 2014-2018 were one of the most-watched technical developments in modern competitive gi BJJ. The lapel-through-leg routing configurations he developed produced sweep and unbalancing mechanics that conventional open-guard variants couldn't replicate. The competitive results he produced demonstrated that the system was viable at elite competitive levels, and his subsequent instructional content extended the influence of his innovations to academies globally.
Cornelius founded Legion American Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego, California as his own pedagogical institution. The academy has produced multiple competitive practitioners and serves as one of the prominent modern American BJJ programs. Cornelius continues to compete selectively and to contribute pedagogical content through his instructional platforms. As of 2026 he remains one of the most consequential pedagogical figures of the modern gi era.
