ROMERO CAVALCANTI

Romero 'Jacaré' Cavalcanti is one of the foundational figures of modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the founder of Alliance, one of the most successful BJJ teams in competitive history. Born in the 1950s in Brazil and trained under Rolls Gracie, Cavalcanti was promoted to 10th degree red belt — the highest rank in the BJJ belt system, awarded only to a small number of foundational figures from the original Gracie generation and their direct contemporaries.

Cavalcanti's individual competitive career was substantial — he competed at the highest IBJJF levels in the pre-2000s era and accumulated multiple championship titles. However, his more significant contribution to BJJ history has been pedagogical: as the founder of Alliance in 1993, he established the institutional framework that has subsequently produced multiple generations of IBJJF Mundial champions, including Cobrinha, Lucas Lepri, Bernardo Faria, Marcus Buchecha, and the broader Alliance competitive roster. The Alliance pedagogical tradition that Cavalcanti established — emphasis on positional control, technical depth, patient submission hunting — has been one of the most influential frameworks in modern competitive BJJ.
