BANANA SPLIT
Banana Split
IBJJF legal at: illegal in IBJJF
The banana split is the compression and stretching submission in which the attacker spreads the opponent's legs in opposite directions to apply force on the hip and groin tissue. The name comes from the body's appearance once the legs are split — the opponent's body resembles a peeled banana with the legs splayed. The technique attacks soft tissue rather than joints, producing intolerable groin and hamstring pain that produces a tap from pain rather than from joint damage.
The mechanics begin from back control with both hooks in, or from the truck position. The attacker hooks one of the opponent's legs and pulls it sharply outward while the other leg is anchored — either by the attacker's grip on the opposite foot, or by the body geometry of the truck. The combined outward force on both legs stretches the groin and hip-flexor tissue past its functional range. The lock works in seconds once the leg-spread angle is established.
The banana split is one of the more controversial submissions in modern grappling — it produces real injury risk to soft tissue, and it is illegal in IBJJF competition due to the risk of groin tears. In no-gi formats that permit it (some ADCC variations, EBI, CJI), it has been used by Geo Martinez, Kade Ruotolo, and the broader 10th Planet competitive roster. Defensively the technique is escaped by preventing the leg-spread from completing (squeeze the knees together actively), by attacking the attacker's exposed back during the leg-control setup, or by tap-to-grip when the spread has engaged.
MECHANICS
- 01Establish back control or truck position with leg access.
- 02Hook one of the opponent's legs and prepare to pull outward.
- 03Anchor the other leg with a grip on the opposite foot or via the truck geometry.
- 04Apply outward force on both legs simultaneously to spread.
- 05Maintain the spread until the opponent taps from soft-tissue pain.
DEFENSES
- →Squeeze the knees together actively to prevent the leg-spread from completing.
- →Attack the attacker's exposed back during the leg-control setup.
- →Tap to grip rather than testing the soft-tissue limit.
- →Prevent back control or truck from establishing in the first place.
- →Roll forward if possible to disrupt the leg-spread geometry.
