BANANA SPLIT SUBMISSION FINISH

Finalização da Banana Split

IBJJF legal at: brown

The banana split submission finish is the painful compression-lock submission that forces the opponent's legs into a hyperextended split position, with the finishing pressure applied at the hip joint and adductor muscles. The technique can be applied from multiple positions (truck, crucifix, half-guard variations) and is one of the most distinctive 10th Planet system finishes. The finish-as-submission differs from the banana split sweep — the same configuration that produces a sweep can also be held to produce a tap submission rather than a positional progression.

The mechanics involve the attacker controlling one of the opponent's legs while extending the attacker's own legs in opposite directions to force the opponent's legs into a hyperextended split. The hip joint and adductor muscles reach their maximum range of motion and the technique produces severe pain rather than structural failure (similar to wristlocks). The submission rate is high because the pain threshold is reached quickly, but the technique can produce hip-joint injury if held past the threshold.

The banana split has been used selectively in elite no-gi competition by 10th Planet system practitioners and various leg-lock specialists. The technique is rare because the entry positions (truck, crucifix) are themselves rare against skilled opponents. Defensively the banana split is escaped by preventing the entry positions from establishing, by recognizing the configuration early and rolling away before the split-force consolidates, or by tapping early.

MECHANICS

  • 01Control one of the opponent's legs from truck, crucifix, or half-guard.
  • 02Extend your own legs in opposite directions.
  • 03Force the opponent's legs into a hyperextended split.
  • 04Apply pressure at the hip joint and adductor muscles.
  • 05Hold the position to produce the submission rather than sweep.

DEFENSES

  • Prevent the entry positions from establishing.
  • Recognize the configuration early.
  • Roll away before the split-force consolidates.
  • Tap early — hip-joint injury risk.
  • Hand-fight the leg-control grip before extension.
