ESTIMA LOCK
Estima Lock
IBJJF legal at: brown (nogi)
The Estima lock is the foot-lock variant developed and popularized by Brazilian brothers Victor and Braulio Estima in the late 2000s. The technique combines elements of the toe hold and the straight ankle lock, gripping the foot in a way that applies torque across the ankle and the tarsals simultaneously while compressing the Achilles tendon. The lock is particularly effective from 50-50 and similar leg-entanglement positions where conventional straight ankle locks have been defended.
The mechanics involve gripping the opponent's foot with both hands — one hand gripping the toes from above and one hand gripping the ankle from below — and rotating the foot inward and downward while pulling toward the attacker's chest. The combined torque on the ankle joint and the compression on the Achilles produces a tap that is significantly harder to escape than a conventional straight ankle lock, because the dual-axis nature of the lock removes the standard escape direction.
Victor Estima used the Estima lock in IBJJF and ADCC competition in the late 2000s and early 2010s; Braulio Estima used it as part of his Gracie Barra competitive game. The technique remains relatively niche compared to the inside heel hook but has gained renewed attention in recent years as competitors look for foot-attack alternatives that work against heel-hook-defending opponents. Defensively the Estima lock is escaped by hiding the foot rotation (keep the toes pointed neutrally), by hand-fighting the foot grip aggressively, or by spinning to the back of the attacker before the dual-axis torque establishes.
MECHANICS
- 01Grip the opponent's toes with one hand from above.
- 02Grip the ankle with the other hand from below.
- 03Rotate the foot inward and downward while pulling toward your chest.
- 04Combine ankle torque with Achilles compression for the dual-axis lock.
- 05Maintain control of the opponent's knee with the legs.
DEFENSES
- →Hide the foot rotation by keeping toes pointed neutrally.
- →Hand-fight the foot grip aggressively.
- →Spin to the back of the attacker before the lock establishes.
- →Cross your free leg over the attacker's body to disrupt the angle.
- →Tap to grip when the dual-axis lock has engaged.
