OMOPLATA FROM CLOSED GUARD
Omoplata da Guarda Fechada
IBJJF legal at: white
The omoplata from closed guard is the canonical shoulder-lock entry from the closed-guard position. The technique uses the bottom player's leg threaded over the opponent's same-side shoulder to trap the arm in a figure-four configuration, then finishes via hip rotation forward. The technique is one of the most foundational closed-guard submissions and pairs alongside the triangle and armbar as the three canonical closed-guard attacks.
The mechanics begin from closed guard with the bottom player establishing sleeve and cross-collar grips. The bottom player opens the guard, posts one foot on the opponent's hip, and swings the opposite leg over the opponent's same-side shoulder. The bottom player's same-side arm controls the opponent's wrist on the trapped arm side. The bottom player then sits up forward, gripping the opponent's belt or back, and rotates the hips forward — the rotation produces the shoulder hyperextension force that finishes the omoplata.
The omoplata from closed guard is foundational and is taught at every academy globally. Notable practitioners include Clark Gracie (whose entire competitive style emphasizes omoplata attacks), Renato Cardoso, and various IBJJF Mundial competitors. The technique pairs particularly well in attack chains — if the omoplata finish is defended by the opponent rolling, the rolling motion typically produces a sweep to top position; if the opponent stacks, the geometry may produce a triangle setup. Defensively the omoplata from closed guard is escaped by recognizing the leg-over-shoulder threading early and rolling forward over the trapped shoulder (the canonical omoplata escape), by hand-fighting the wrist control before the rotation completes, or by stacking the bottom player to disrupt the hip-rotation mechanics.
MECHANICS
- 01Establish sleeve and cross-collar grips from closed guard.
- 02Open guard and post one foot on opponent's hip.
- 03Swing opposite leg over opponent's same-side shoulder.
- 04Control opponent's wrist on trapped arm.
- 05Sit up forward and rotate hips to finish.
DEFENSES
- →Recognize leg-over-shoulder threading early.
- →Roll forward over trapped shoulder (canonical escape).
- →Hand-fight wrist control before rotation completes.
- →Stack the bottom player to disrupt hip rotation.
- →Posture up to deny the closed-guard configuration.
