CROSSOVER SWEEP

Raspagem Crossover

Also known as: Lasso Crossover, Spider-Lasso Sweep

The crossover sweep is the canonical sweep from lasso guard in which the bottom player crosses one leg over the opponent's body to invert the opponent and complete the sweep to mount or top side control. The technique is one of the highest-percentage lasso-guard sweeps and exemplifies the modern open-guard inversion-based sweep style that gi competition has refined since the early 2010s.

The mechanics begin from lasso guard with the bottom player having one foot threaded through the opponent's same-side arm (the lasso configuration) and gripping the opposite sleeve cuff. The bottom player crosses the opposite leg over the opponent's body to the lasso side, simultaneously pulling the gripped sleeve down and across the bottom player's body. The combined leg-over motion and sleeve pull produce a rotational moment that flips the opponent over the lasso-side direction. The finish lands the bottom player in mount or in a strong top position depending on the rotation completion.

The crossover sweep has been used extensively by lasso-guard specialists at every level. Notable practitioners include Mendes brothers, Rubens 'Cobrinha' Charles, and various modern lightweight Alliance-trained competitors. The technique is particularly effective against opponents who maintain upright posture against lasso (where the rotational geometry works most cleanly) and is less effective against opponents who stack the bottom player as a defensive response. Defensively the crossover sweep is countered by stacking the bottom player aggressively (drives the bottom player's body up rather than rotating), by hand-fighting the sleeve grip before the crossover initiates, or by stripping the lasso configuration before the sweep launches.

KEY POINTS

  • 01Establish lasso configuration with one foot through the opponent's same-side arm.
  • 02Grip the opposite sleeve cuff.
  • 03Cross the opposite leg over the opponent's body to the lasso side.
  • 04Pull the sleeve down and across simultaneously.
  • 05Follow the rotation to land in mount or top side control.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Crossing the leg without simultaneously pulling the sleeve.
  • Failing to maintain the lasso configuration during the crossover.
  • Releasing the sleeve grip during the rotation.
  • Initiating against opponents who are stacking — wrong defensive response.
  • Not following through to mount.

TRAINING DRILLS

  • Lasso-configuration drill from spider guard.
  • Slow crossover sweep reps with cooperative partner (50 each side).
  • Crossover against progressive resistance.
  • Crossover-to-mount consolidation.
  • Live rolling from lasso guard with crossover sweep as primary goal.
