TRUCK POSITION

Truck (Caminhão)

The truck is the 10th Planet-system control position used as the structural entry to the twister submission and as a back-take and back-control transition tool. The position involves the attacker positioned behind the opponent on the mat with one of the attacker's legs threaded through the opponent's legs and hooked behind the opponent's knee on the same side, while the attacker controls the opponent's far-side head and shoulder. The position was developed and popularized by Eddie Bravo and is the structural backbone of the 10th Planet upper-body attack system.

The mechanics begin from a back-control or back-take attempt where the opponent has rolled or scrambled. The attacker threads one leg through the opponent's legs from behind, hooks the foot behind the opponent's same-side knee, and gripping the opponent's far-side leg with the attacker's other leg in a figure-four configuration. The attacker's hands typically grip the opponent's far-side head, hair, or chin to control the upper body. From the truck position the attacker can transition to the twister (the signature 10th Planet neck-and-spine submission), to back control via re-hooking, to a calf slicer using the leg configuration, or to bow-and-arrow style chokes.

The truck and its associated twister submission became commercially visible after Eddie Bravo's submission of Royler Gracie at ADCC 2003. Notable practitioners include Eddie Bravo, Geo Martinez, Richie Martinez, and various 10th Planet system black belts. The position is rare in IBJJF gi competition (the twister is illegal in IBJJF) but common in ADCC and EBI no-gi formats. Defensively the truck is countered by hand-fighting the leg threading before the figure-four consolidates, by rolling away from the captured-leg side before the upper-body grip locks, or by attacking the attacker's exposed back during the entanglement window.

KEY PRINCIPLES

  • 01Thread one leg through the opponent's legs from behind.
  • 02Hook the foot behind the opponent's same-side knee.
  • 03Figure-four the legs with the other leg gripping the opponent's far leg.
  • 04Control the opponent's far-side head, hair, or chin.
  • 05Treat the truck as a submission hub — twister, back take, calf slicer.

COMMON ATTACKS

  • Twister submission (primary 10th Planet attack)
  • Back control re-take
  • Calf slicer using the leg configuration
  • Bow-and-arrow style choke
  • Banana split / Electric chair sweep

COMMON DEFENSES

  • Hand-fight the leg threading before the figure-four consolidates.
  • Roll away from the captured-leg side before the upper-body grip locks.
  • Attack the attacker's exposed back during the entanglement window.
  • Strip the head-control grip before the twister sets up.
  • Bridge laterally to dislodge the upper-body control.
