LOCKDOWN HYPEREXTENSION

Hiperextensão do Lockdown

IBJJF legal at: brown (nogi)

The lockdown hyperextension is the leg-lock submission executed from the 10th Planet lockdown half guard, in which the bottom player uses the figure-four leg trap to apply hyperextension force on the opponent's trapped knee. The technique is one of the canonical 10th Planet finishes and exploits the structural compromise that the lockdown creates on the opponent's leg.

The mechanics begin from established lockdown — the bottom player has trapped one of the opponent's legs with a figure-four of their own legs, foot hooking under the trapped leg's knee. To finish, the bottom player extends both legs simultaneously while keeping the opponent's foot trapped, which produces hyperextension force on the trapped knee. The trapped leg's knee cannot escape the configuration without the bottom player releasing the figure-four first, which gives the lockdown its name.

Eddie Bravo and the 10th Planet system developed and popularized the lockdown hyperextension as part of the broader 10th Planet half-guard offensive system. The technique works particularly well against opponents who are unfamiliar with the lockdown's structural threats and try to crush the position with chest pressure without recognizing the leg-lock setup. Defensively the technique is escaped by stepping the trapped leg outward to break the figure-four before the extension applies, by attacking the bottom player's free leg with a kneebar or heel hook (no-gi), or by tap-to-grip when the extension has engaged.

MECHANICS

  • 01Establish the lockdown — figure-four of your legs around the opponent's trapped leg.
  • 02Hook your foot under the trapped leg's knee.
  • 03Extend both legs simultaneously to apply hyperextension force.
  • 04Keep the opponent's foot trapped throughout the extension.
  • 05Finish progressively to give the opponent time to tap before injury.

DEFENSES

  • Step the trapped leg outward to break the figure-four before extension.
  • Attack the bottom player's free leg with a kneebar or heel hook (no-gi).
  • Tap to grip when the extension has engaged.
  • Drop chest pressure to flatten the bottom player and disrupt the lockdown.
  • Prevent the lockdown from establishing in the first place.
