ELECTRIC CHAIR SWEEP

Raspagem da Cadeira Elétrica

Also known as: Lockdown Electric Chair, 10th Planet Electric Chair

The electric chair sweep is the signature 10th Planet sweep from the lockdown half-guard position in which the bottom player uses leg-extension geometry to dump the opponent backward into a vulnerable seated position (the 'electric chair' configuration). The technique exploits the lockdown's leg-stretch to produce a sweep mechanics that conventional half-guard cannot access, and is one of the most distinctive 10th Planet system techniques.

The mechanics begin from established lockdown half-guard with the bottom player's legs figure-foured around the opponent's trapped leg and stretched downward. The bottom player establishes an underhook on the opposite side and reaches for the opponent's far ankle with the underhook-side hand. The bottom player then explosively extends both lockdown legs while pulling the far ankle inward — the combined motion forces the opponent backward into a seated position with both legs spread. The opponent lands in the 'electric chair' configuration which can either be converted to a top-position sweep, used as a setup for banana split submission, or progressed to back take.

The electric chair was developed by Eddie Bravo as part of the broader 10th Planet lockdown system. Notable practitioners include Eddie Bravo, Geo Martinez, and various 10th Planet system black belts. The technique is rare in elite no-gi competition because the entry window (the opponent must permit the lockdown to establish) is narrow at the highest competitive levels, but produces excellent results when the configuration consolidates. Defensively the electric chair is countered by preventing the lockdown from establishing in the first place, by hand-fighting the far-ankle grip before consolidation, or by hipping out before the leg-extension force compromises the base.

KEY POINTS

  • 01Establish lockdown half-guard configuration.
  • 02Secure underhook on the opposite side.
  • 03Reach for the opponent's far ankle with the underhook-side hand.
  • 04Extend lockdown legs explosively while pulling the far ankle inward.
  • 05Force the opponent into the seated electric-chair position.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Initiating without secure lockdown configuration.
  • Releasing the underhook during the extension.
  • Extending without simultaneously pulling the far ankle.
  • Failing to follow through to top position or banana split.
  • Using the technique against opponents who haven't allowed the lockdown.

TRAINING DRILLS

  • Lockdown-setup drill from half-guard.
  • Slow electric chair reps with cooperative partner.
  • Sweep against progressive resistance.
  • Electric-chair-to-banana-split chain drill.
  • Live rolling with lockdown-and-electric-chair as primary half-guard system.
